Day 2: A Taste of Puritan Life & Fresh Lobster

Fall Foliage: Day 2

Most people greet Monday morning with apprehension....Not Us! We started early with a hot breakfast and headed off for Salem. We found Salem to be quite small but bursting with character. How lucky we are to have visited this town of witchcraft hysteria during the Halloween season (They LOVE Halloween).
After a quick tour of the town center we arrived at the House of Seven Gables (the home made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne). At first glance, the Puritan style house wasn't much to look at but when you learn that it is the oldest wooden mansion in the country, you get some perspective really quick. You may wonder how was Hawthorne connected to the home; His cousin was Sussana Ingersoll, the sole heir to the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, where he visited frequently.

Our brief stop in Gloucester, MA consisted of a delicious and extremely entertaining lobster luncheon at the Gloucester House. The owner Thomas depicted some local history, picked on Shirley a little and taught us how to eat a FRESH lobster. It was messy, fun and a must-do New England experience.

After a peaceful ride over the New Hampshire state boarder, we stopped by a "State Liquor Store". Here, we learned there is no sales tax in N.H and the state has complete control of the sale of ALL liquor. Ironically, the stores are located at highway rest stops.

We are now staying at the Margate Resort Hotel where our balconies overlook a serene lake surrounded by fall foliage. Great choice Katherine.
